As 2025 draws to a close, the FAU LMQ is reflecting on a year of scientific growth and community building. From strategic retreats to public outreach, here are the highlights that defined our year.
Strategic Collaboration & Internal Exchange
We kicked off our major activities in April with a workshop in Waischenfeld. This retreat was essential for bridging our research areas, sparking new interdisciplinary projects between the research groups.
To maintain this momentum, we launched the FAU LMQ Insight Talks, a monthly series where our members present their research, fostering a continuous culture of knowledge sharing. The series started with talks by Janina Maultzsch and Daniel Burgarth.
National Recognition: “Quantenort” 2025
In celebration of the global Year of Quantum, our FAU was officially designated a Quantenort (Place of Quantum) by the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG). This honor highlights the FAU LMQ’s role as a leading hub for quantum research and innovation.
Public Impact & Scientific Milestones
Looking Forward
As we move into 2026, the FAU LMQ remains committed to exploring the synergies of light, matter, and quantum technologies to push the boundaries of what is possible.
Thank you to everyone who made 2025 a success!

Public Impact & Scientific Milestones
Long Night of Science (October): LMQ took center stage, hosting a main session that brought the wonders of light, matter and quantum technologies to life for a wide range of visitors through live demonstrations and expert talks.
1st FAU LMQ Science Day (November): We held our inaugural Science Day, a major milestone that showcased the full scientific breadth of our profile center and the diverse talent of our researchers.
Physics Christmas Lecture (December): Our members Kai Philip Schmidt, Christoph Marquardt, and Christopher Eichler brought the year to a festive close by delivering the physics department’s annual Christmas Lecture “Lucy’s quantastische Weihnachtsreise”, blending high-level physics with holiday cheer.
