FAU LMQ People Spotlight: Florian Lange

In this FAU LMQ People Spotlight, we interviewed the researcher Florian Lange, who is working at the Research Unit NHR@FAU since 2022.

What is your research topic? What is your current role?

My current role is split between user support at the NHR@FAU computing center, with a focus on users from physics, and doing research. A recent project together with the group of Michael Hartmann is about the simulation of superconducting qubit lattices with matrix-product states to analyze their localization properties.

How is your research linked to the research foci of the FAU LMQ?

The already mentioned superconducting qubits are systems with light-matter interaction. I have also done some work on one-dimensional condensed matter systems that are driven out of equilibrium by a light pulse.

What do you find most fascinating in your research?

It is difficult to answer because it depends a lot on the project. In general, a nice aspect of working at the computing center as a project adviser is that you come in contact with many different topics from physics.

When I am not working at the FAU, then …

I try to spend at least some time outside, since I mostly work at a computer. From time to time I also go to rock and metal concerts.

Do you have a secret talent?

Not sure if this counts, but I am above average at video games.

What does a typical day in your working life look like?

I first check if there any messages or support cases that I need to respond to, since these usually take precedence. If not, I do research related things like reading papers or running simulations on the HPC clusters.

What are your plans for the future?

No specific plans, but I intend to stay at NHR@FAU and will hopefully get to be involved in interesting research also in the future.
