In this FAU LMQ People Spotlight, we interviewed our member Heiko Weber, who holds the Chair for Applied Physics at FAU since 2004.
What is your research topic?
We cover a wide range of topics in solid-state physics, with a focus on the fundamental laws of physics and unconventional properties. For example, we are currently investigating how spin signals from a colour centre can be read out electrically – a key component for quantum technology on the silicon carbide platform, an area in which we excel. Another focus of our intensive research is on how the scientific community can best benefit from global experimental research data. We are developing methodologies, software and concepts to make this possible.
How is your research linked to the research foci of the FAU LMQ?
We work with materials and use optical and electrical methods to analyse them. Thanks to our many years of expertise in the field of point defects, the spins of which are increasingly coming into focus, we feel to be in the core of LMQ.
Why exactly this topic/these topics?
This is by chance: I have always found it rewarding to be part of a shared strategy and to support joint projects in an innovative way. And research into the interaction between light and matter is truly fascinating. I feel that our perspective from the field of solid-state physics is driving the discipline forward.
Who in the Profile Center do you hope to collaborate with in the future?
With those that I never expected to collaborate with.
When I am not working as a scientist, then …
I enjoy culture, nature, people … and good food.
Do you have a secret talent?
If so, it will remain secret …
What does a typical day in your working life look like?
I couldn’t say. Every day is different. One thing’s for sure: I’m an early riser. When I’m giving a talk, I often start preparing as early as four in the morning.
Where do you see the FAU LMQ in 5 or 10 years?
It will be an attractive research hub where people enjoy to be.
